{"id":2120,"date":"2018-10-25T17:35:17","date_gmt":"2018-10-25T17:35:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.refugepoint.org\/?p=2120"},"modified":"2018-12-04T15:18:45","modified_gmt":"2018-12-04T15:18:45","slug":"how-frank-giustra-is-turning-business-savvy-into-private-sector-support-for-refugees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.refugepoint.org\/how-frank-giustra-is-turning-business-savvy-into-private-sector-support-for-refugees\/","title":{"rendered":"How Frank Giustra is Turning Business Savvy Into Private Sector Support for Refugees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2125 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/refuge.101danish.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/shutterstock_469274687.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"763\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier this month, Barrie Landry, Ed Shapiro, and Sasha Chanoff hosted a dinner for Frank Giustra, philanthropist and founder of Lionsgate Entertainment, to introduce the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1EG98gLvIwDDhAUHFNVjAZ8qYSKyxkZQi\/view\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ascend Venture Fund<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (AVF) to some of Boston\u2019s thought leaders, philanthropists, and investors, including members of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/neidonors.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New England International Donors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><b>Ascend Venture Fund and Impact Investing in the Refugee Space<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2124 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/refuge.101danish.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Screen-Shot-2018-10-24-at-1.10.28-PM-212x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"212\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At a recent dinner to discuss a new impact investing opportunity to support Greece and refugees, Frank Guistra shared his story about stepping into the Mediterranean Sea in the middle of the night on the shores of Greece as a boat of refugees arrived. \u00a0A mother trying to get off the boat handed Frank her two-year-old child while others around them wept, sang, prayed, and rejoiced at making it to safety.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frank\u2019s commitment to Greece and refugees started at that moment and led to the creation of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1EG98gLvIwDDhAUHFNVjAZ8qYSKyxkZQi\/view\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ascend Venture Fund<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which supports the social and economic integration of refugee communities in Greece through increased access to quality employment. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To achieve this goal, AVF will invest in Greek businesses that are growing and are committed to hiring vulnerable Greek nationals and refugees. AVF aims to raise an initial ten million euros and has already received commitments from a number of investors, and is in the final stages of securing funding from the Open Society Foundation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Impact investing in the refugee space is a growing field according to Andrew Stern, a guest at the dinner who shared information about the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.refugeeinvestments.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Refugee Investment Network<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which aims to draw attention to AVF, and is the first impact investing and blended finance collaborative dedicated to creating long-term solutions to global forced displacement. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But how does one measure the impact of helping refugees to find work? Amy Slaughter, a winner of the 2018 Schwab Foundation \/ World Economic Forum Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award, spoke about the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.refugeeselfreliance.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Refugee Self Reliance Initiative<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a multi-stakeholder initiative which is creating the Self Reliance Index, a tool to measure the success of efforts around the world that help refugees stand on their own two feet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Investing to support refugees has a great deal of promise in terms of capital ready to be deployed, including George Soro\u2019s 2016 announcement of a half-billion dollars to invest in programs and companies benefiting refugees and host communities. But to date there are few investment-ready opportunities. Dinner attendees engaged in a discussion about the opportunities and challenges of impact investing in the refugee space. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Willy Foote, the founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rootcapital.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Root Capital<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, highlighted the fact that investments in true frontier markets characterized by instability may not always yield the projected return. \u201cIt\u2019s important to align expectations up front with investors and identify and measure other key aspects of social impact in addition to financial gains,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Noubar Afeyan, a founder of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/auroraprize.com\/en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aurora Humanitarian Initiative<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the Aurora Prize, agreed with Willy and expressed interest in finding a way to identify the impact of philanthropic projects by measuring and quantifying the resultant social value.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deborah Frieze, Founder and President of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bostonimpact.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boston Impact Initiative<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, highlighted a concern about letting the market benefit from forced displacement, and cautioned about the importance of ensuring that financial returns alone don\u2019t dominate this emerging field. Her remarks were similar to insight from Klaus Schwab\u2019s new book, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Shaping-Fourth-Industrial-Revolution-Schwab\/dp\/1944835148\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shaping the Fourth Industrial Revolution<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in which he writes that businesses should align their values and growth opportunities with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jackie Vanderbrug, co-author of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Gender-Lens-Investing-Uncovering-Opportunities\/dp\/1119182905\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gender Lens Investing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, talked about the early stages of gender lens investing and how there was a need to reframe the issue from solely \u201cbenefiting a select group\u201d to including and highlighting the benefits to society overall. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frank shared aspirations about how the Ascend Venture Fund could become a catalyst and road map for additional funding in the impact investing space to support refugees and host communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, it\u2019s clear that investment dollars dwarf philanthropic dollars, and that there is an unprecedented need and a great opportunity to harness the power of the private sector in support of refugees and their host communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barrie Landry and Ed Shapiro shared final words about the importance of collaboration, and the value of bringing together leaders to work in partnership toward common
